Sunderland Airshow History
Sunderland International Airshow is one of the biggest free annual airshows in Europe, held at the Roker and Seaburn seafronts.

It takes place over the course of three days, usually the final weekend in July (Friday to Sunday), and attracts around 1,000,000 spectators every year.

The airshow was first held in 1989 as a single day show, and was planned to be a one-off event, when it attracted 250,000 spectators. Due to its success, from 1991 it became a two-day show, and subsequently three days.

The Sunderland Airshow was cancelled in 2020 & 2021 due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Sunderland International Air Show usually takes place over three days on the last weekend of July, and the air display is held over the coastline at Seaburn and Roker in Sunderland.

With high-speed jets, breathtaking display teams and precision flying in the air and a massive choice of activities on the ground, there's something for all the family at this action-packed weekend. The Royal Navy also traditionally have a warship off the coast every year.

The Friday night launch is rounded off with a large firework display.

Sunderland Airshow Cancelled

In response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Sunderland City Council has confirmed the cancellation of this year’s Sunderland Airshow. Fiona Brown, Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, said: “Following careful consideration, we have taken the decision to cancel Sunderland Airshow this year.

"We understand that this news will be disappointing, not only for visitors but for everyone who works to make Sunderland Airshow a success. The safety and wellbeing of our residents and visitors is paramount and we must continue to do everything we can to support the coronavirus recovery in the city.

"We look forward to welcoming everyone back to our award winning seafront in 2022."
