History
The airport officially opened on 5 May 1939 but regular services only commenced in October 1946.
In 1960 there were four grass runways, with lengths ranging from 2,040 ft to 3,060 ft and in the same year a new tarmacked runway of 4,800 ft was constructed.
In the early 2000s a new terminal was constructed along with a new tarmacked runway of 4,800 ft. In 2012 the runway was resurfaced along with taxiways and a new drainage system was implemented along with new airfield lighting and navigational aids.
A growing number of proponents continue to argue that the runway should be extended to 1700m to permit more profitable operation of the Airbus A320 family or Boeing 737 Classic family aircraft, as in the neighboring island of Jersey. This would provide a wider range of flights in and out of the island increasing the island's economy and number of visitors each year.
