UK Airshow Calendar 2008

Current Airshow Calendar

In 2008 many people were excited to see the UK debut of the F-22 'Raptor' stealth fighter display at the Royal International Air Tattoo. However, in the week preceding the air show, RAF Fairford saw unusually heavy rainfall which caused major problems which resulted in waterlogged conditions not only in the public car parks but also on the airfield itself. It was hoped that they could still put on a show at RIAT but it was announced on the Friday that the show on Saturday had been cancelled and later that Sunday had also been cancelled.

The Royal Air Force put on another multi-role demo like last year. This included an E-3D Sentry, Tornado F3s, Tornado GR4s, Chinook, and Hawk T1s along with troops and pyrotechnics. They put on their display at Biggin Hill, RAF Cosford, Kemble, RAF Waddington, Sunderland, Southport, and RAF Leuchars.

On 3rd July 2008 Vulcan XH558 received her permit to fly which was just in time for the RAF Waddington International Air Show. On Saturday, XH558 made her first display to the public for nearly 15 years leaving members of the crowd emotional as the she soared through the Lincolnshire skies with the equally iconic Lancaster bomber. Unfortunately due to a technical problem the Vulcan could not display on the Sunday, although she did performed a fast taxi run. The Vulcan would go on to display at many more air shows and events until the end of 2015.

The redeveloped AirSpace (Hangar 1) museum at IWM Duxford officially opened to the public on 12th July 2008. The building, which provides 12,000 m2 of floor space, consists of an aircraft conservation area, a large exhibition hall, and a mezzanine providing views of the aircraft and interactive educational installations exploring aeronautical engineering and the principles of flight.
